![]() They also have magic weapons, which counters a looot of things that will otherwise screw you over. Special mention goes to Guardians, who will absolutely wreck enemy sacreds with their Black Halberds. Their cavalry is good, but also real expensive. They're at least more available then Priest Smiths though. Their crossbows deal hilarious damage when they do shoot, but they're kind of hard to mass for crossbows and their rate of fire sucks so I'm not a big fan. Sometimes you want the ones with shields to take missile fire and if you're getting super repelled you might even go for the pikeneers. The flails are definitely the best black plate infantry most of the time because of their two attacks. Earth boots are still very helpful for ritual stuff like wizard towers and melancholia, especially on your E3 Master Smiths. This is why MA Ulm's magic is actually pretty good, even if they don't have high paths or diverse paths. An E2 wearing earth boots and casting earthpower can cast literally any of the very good earth battlemagic in combat. Summon Earthpower is conj3 and gives you E3 in combat with your E2s. You could try using them as a full super combatant, but lacking stealth or magic phase movement they're pretty likely to get countered and killed in their very first real battle unless you're super careful not to reveal them to enemy scouts before then. ![]() Kings of Elemental Earth and Troll Kings are incredibly wasteful for mere thugs, costing like 50 earth gems apiece. Later in the game you can use Iron Angels which are pretty hard to deal with and come with several slots pre-filled in with great gear. Lord Guardians are also a good niche choice because of their cool Halt Heretic aura. I'd double or triple up on Black Lord thugs with minimal gear rather then wasting a ton of gems filling every one one of a Black Lord's slots. They have heavy armour and a horse so they're pretty ok at that. Consider giving EA Agartha a go for your next campaign.įor very low-effort thugging you can use a Black Lord. In general though, Ulm is, in my opinion, a beginner's nation that lets you learn the mechanics and desire more from your nation. Tell them to fire on enemy archers to minimize their damage to your own forces. Your arbalests are excellent at killing armoured units- such as your own, sadly. The tower shields will be superior against missile fire, while pikes are great at countering cavalry, axes to fight against giants, but just plain infantry are not going to be too interesting a force- consider mixing in some cavalry. When it comes to thugs, you can summon troll kings or kings of elemental earth.īlack plate infantry are certainly strong, and flails are wonderful. Astral lets you make crystal matrixes, which let you form communions if you have access to independents with astral magic. Fire lets you make lightless lanterns, which are amazing research boosters, and earth, aside from earth boots, lets you make things like girdles of strength to help your mages cast more spells. Your smiths have astral and air randoms as well, which opens up your options a bit. ![]() Things will probably change in multiplayer game. ![]() What is the good way to find a multiplayer game at the noob level. I am sure I missed a lot of things about Ulm. I would like to give the race a bit more credit before I move on. Something more creative.Īny other general tips and things to look out for are welcome. How can you play MA Ulm without only having big line of Black Plate Infantry with many Priest Smiths in the back. Is the Black Plate Infantry with a big Tower Shield better vs friendly fire? I really like idea of Crossbowman, but they keep killing my guys. When would I use different variants of Black Plate Infantry? I am mass producing Black Plate Infantry - Flail version, but it gets a bit boring. So there is a lot of cheap equipment but not many takers.Ĭould you suggest some other interesting Earth/Fire with maybe random Smith splash I could look in to? I can craft a lot, for cheep, as Ulm but things I craft are dwarven hammers to help me craft things even cheaper and earth boots so my mages will get to E3 so they can spam Legions of Steel and Iron Blizzard. But what I have noticed is that there are no reliable summons that could be changed in to thugs. So MA Ulm can do earth and fire reliably. Ive done couple of single player games and I am starting to get a feel for how things work.įew observations/question relating mostly to early/mid game - from a noob perspective ofc.
